It is a fast growing yet primitive city, though many hands work tirelessly day and night to ensure that one day it will be counted as a one of the greatest settlements of Khorvaire. The order in the city is maintained by Sora Maenya's elite Troll guards, assisted by Gnoll mercenaries.
Le Grand Rocher
The Grand Rocher is the seat of power in Droaam. It is the largest city and the place where the Filles De Sora Kell rule over Droaam. The Grand Rocher is a large mountain jutting up from an otherwise flat landscape. During the Empire Dhakaani, Droaam was an important city and a gateway to the west of their empire. Legends say the mountain pulled up through the ground during the Daelkyr War. Despite its size the Grand Rocher is not very sophisticated. Maison Tharashk is the only Maison Marquée du Dragon in the city and other than armor and weapons, items are hard to come by. Temples to the Légion Souveraine and The Flamme d'Argent are unknown here but the Sombres Six is well represented.
Location
The Grand Rocher, as its name implies, is built inside of a vast mountain peak standing at the very center of Droaam. Ancient passages dating from the time of the Empire Dhakaani honeycomb the mountain, and Dhakaani ruins dot the fertile plains which surround it. The Sorcières' court can be found mostly inside of the mountain proper; however the Crag's population outstrips its size, and so many of its citizens have either moved into the ruins that surround it or have built barracks, houses and hovels amid them. One trade route brings goods from Brelande and Muraille-Grise into the city by road.
Histoire
It is believed that before the Guerre Daelkyr, a great Dhakaani metropolis occupied the plains surrounding the Grand Rocher, the ruins of which remain to this day. In that time, the mountain did not have its current form, and might not have been a mountain yet at all; according to legend, it was torn out of the ground during the war, when the Daelkyr turned the hobGobelins and Gobelins of the city to stone. The sight of the stone statues kept intelligent creatures away from the Grand Rocher for millennia, as rumors whispered that the vengeful spirits of the petrified still lurked within their stone bodies, eager to strike out at warm bodies and petrify them as well.
The Filles De Sora Kell proved these rumors false when they appeared in 986AR and made the mountain the base for their new capital of Droaam. Since then the city has grown exponentially as monsters flock to the Sorcières' banner, its total population now numbering among those of the other great metropolises.
Architecture
The city is an intriguing mix of perfectly restored Dhakaani architecture, sophisticated Méduse stonework and rougher contributions by the various other monstrous races. Harpie roosts dot the mountainside, Ogre laborers erect sturdy but rough structures and Pacte de Znir barracks stand side-by-side with the hovels housing thousands of Gobelin squatters. Much of the citizens do not live in permanent structures at all, instead using tents until more homes can be built for them. The Grand Rocher is thus a perfect analogy for Droaam as a whole: a mix of various different monstrous influences that somehow still work together.
Important Locations
- Court of the Sorcières: The inside of the Grand Rocher is used mostly by the Filles De Sora Kell, warlords staying at or visiting the court, foreign ambassadors, guards and the servants who serve all of them. Most of Droaam's citizens can see in the dark, there are therefore no sources of light inside of the tunnel. Foreign dignitaries are dependent completely upon torches and guides to find their way, no doubt a tactic by the Sorcières to put them ill at ease and so gain an advantage during negotiations. The Chambres of the top warlords and the Sorcières offer some comforts, but the rest of the rooms and tunnels are quite bare.
- The Arena: The arena is the greatest source for spectacle and entertainment within the Grand Rocher. It is absolutely massive in order to best accommodate the Crag's large (in more ways than one) population, and races, gladiatorial combat, and blood sports of all kinds are performed here at almost all hours of the day and night. The arena also serves as an execution ground, as well as a training facility for Droaam's guards and mercenary forces.
- The Ossuary: The statues of the city's original inhabitants have not been smashed, but have all been gathered in one ancient Dhakaani building: the ossuary. Here the remains of an entire city (and, somehow, a hydra too big to fit through the gates) slumber, souls trapped in their petrified body. Even after thousand of years it is still possible to return one of the statues to life (provided it is whole and unbroken), but long, long years of imprisonment have twisted their minds so that few are willing to try.
- **Maison Tharashk** enclave: Maison Tharashk is the only foreign power to maintain an outpost within the town, though the one in Muraille-Grise is likely more important to their operations.
- Various temples to L'Ombre, Le Narquois and other dark gods.
The Great Crag (Metropolis, 32,230): At the center of Droaam, a vast mountain peak dominates an otherwise flat and fertile plain. According to legend, the Great Crag was torn up from the earth during the war between the hobgoblins and the daelkyr. The ruins of an ancient hobgoblin city are scattered across the plain, and ancient passages honeycomb the mountain itself. For centuries, the area was shunned and said to be cursed, but the Daughters of Sora Kell have no fear of ancient superstitions. Over the past decade, the hags and their ogre laborers have built a great city at the base of the mountain. The Great Crag is a bizarre mix of architectural styles; beautifully restored buildings from the time of the Dhakaani Empire stand beside huge, rough structures that ogres have assembled using irregular stone blocks. Harpies live in roosts high on cliff faces, while the rest of the citizens make do with temporary tents and huts until more permanent structures are established. The court of the three sisters is carved into the mountain itself, consisting of a combination of rough-hewn passages and ancient chambers dating back to the hobgoblin empire.
The Great Crag is a work in progress; its population outstrips its size. Thousands of goblin squatters live in camps scattered around the edges of the city, alongside well-organized gnoll barracks. An enormous arena covers one of the largest sections of the city. Here, races, gladiatorial combat, and blood sports of all types play out before packed crowds in the Crag. The arena also serves as a training facility for those who offer their services to the hags.
The only dragonmarked house with an outpost in the Crag is House Tharashk. There are temples to the Mockery and the Shadow, but these are relatively small, since the hags do not directly support either deity. The marketplace sells foreign goods that have been shipped in from Graywall, along with the unusual crafts of the monstrous races, such as medusa stonework. Sora Maenya’s elite troll guards, assisted by gnoll mercenaries, maintain order in the city.
